How AI Helped Me Find a $10K Donor Hiding in Plain Sight

How AI Helped Me Find a $10K Donor Hiding in Plain Sight

One of the most common things I hear from a new client, partway through an audit, is some version of: "I had no idea that person was even still connected to us." It happens more often than you'd expect, and it's usually not because the donor disappeared. It's because they were sitting in a spreadsheet, unremarkable at a glance, until someone actually looked closely.

Here's a version of how that plays out, without naming a specific organization or individual.

The donor who looked unremarkable

A donor gave modest, steady annual gifts for several years — nothing that would stand out on a top-donor report, and nothing that had triggered any deeper look from the organization's staff. On paper, this looked like a loyal but small-dollar sustainer, the kind of donor who gets a standard thank-you note and not much else.

What a closer look actually found

When I ran a capacity and pattern review across the full donor base, this record surfaced for two reasons. First, the giving pattern showed a gradual, consistent increase year over year — a signal, easy to miss looking at any single gift in isolation, but obvious once the multi-year trend was laid out clearly. Second, publicly available information suggested this person's capacity had likely grown substantially since their giving relationship with the organization began — the kind of context that's genuinely useful to be aware of before starting a conversation, but takes real time to compile manually across dozens or hundreds of donor records.

Neither signal on its own would have been unusual. Together, laid out clearly, they pointed to someone worth a real conversation rather than another form thank-you note.

What happened next was entirely human

Once this donor was flagged, everything from there was a normal cultivation process — a phone call from someone at the organization, a genuine conversation about what the organization was working on, and eventually a specific, thoughtful ask. The donor gave a $10,000 gift, several times larger than any single gift they'd made before, and it wasn't a surprise to them at all — it was simply the first time anyone had asked at the level that matched where they actually were.

The actual lesson here

This wasn't a case of AI "finding" a donor in some magical sense. It compressed what would have been hours of manual pattern review across a large spreadsheet into something that could be reviewed and acted on quickly. The insight was already sitting in the data. What changed was how fast it became visible, and therefore how fast a real person could act on it.

This is the pattern I see over and over in these audits: the opportunity is very rarely a mystery donor nobody's heard of. It's someone already in the database, already engaged, whose actual capacity and trajectory never got a close enough look because nobody had the time to look that closely at every record. That's the exact problem this kind of process is built to solve.
