Leaving Six-Figure Corporate Jobs to Do Work That Matters

Twenty years in corporate sales and marketing, working with some of the largest brands in the world, was a serious adventure, but eventually it made me restless. Closing another deal for another wealthy company stopped feeling exciting, so I decided to put my experience to work doing something more meaningful and personal.

The decision wasn't about being "unhappy"

To be clear, I wasn't completely miserable. I had simply become dissatisfied. I finally recognized that the skills I'd built and the successes I'd stacked up over the years were fully transferable to something that would feel meaningful to me. So why wouldn't I pivot?

What made the decision feel possible

I talked with friends and close colleagues about how I was feeling, and they were in wild agreement about how directly my corporate sales background mapped onto nonprofit development work. For twenty years I closed large, complex deals, so closing major gifts and corporate sponsorships for organizations I actually believed in would be a logical (and amazing!) next chapter.

The version of this that made sense for me

Rather than trying to land a full-time nonprofit development role immediately, without any sector-specific track record, I chose to start with focused consulting work. I'm in a unique position to bring a corporate sales skill set directly to nonprofits that need exactly that kind of relationship-based fundraising help. It let me start applying the skill immediately, and build real, specific outcomes.

What I'd tell someone considering the same move

I can't be the only one feeling this way. With all the challenges we're facing these days, I'm sure many others have a growing sense that they want their work to matter more than the paycheck alone, and it's very likely their experience is more transferable than they think. In Corporate America we learned real relationship-building and how to make confident, direct asks. That's hard, so if we already have that, it's a head start.

Where this is headed

This consulting work is, for me, a deliberate first step. I jumped right in and am helping nonprofits build real, tangible outcomes. In the longer term, if a full-time role makes sense for me, great! For now though, this is the rewarding experience I was seeking and if anyone else wants to make a similar transition, I'd love to connect and share my insights.
